Sollentuna's Past: A Brief History
Sollentuna municipality was officially created in 1863. However, its borders are almost the same as those of Sollentuna Parish, which has existed since the 12th century. For a long time, Sollentuna was mostly a countryside area.
Modern Sollentuna grew up around the railway line between Uppsala and Stockholm. This railway opened in 1866. Five of the eight districts in the municipality today are named after railway stations. These stations are now part of the Stockholm commuter rail system. From south to north, they are Helenelund, Tureberg (its station is called Sollentuna Station), Häggvik, Norrviken, and Rotebro. Viby is an extension of Norrviken. The other two districts, Edsberg and Sjöberg, are found along the road to Danderyd. Other ways to get into Sollentuna include a road from Kallhäll to Rotebro and the E 4 motorway, which follows a similar path to the railway.
Sollentuna was given the title of a merchant town (köping) in 1944. This special status became outdated with a new municipal reform in 1971.
