Getting Around Täby: Public Transportation
Täby Municipality has a good public transport system. It is part of the Stockholm public transport system, run by SL.
You can travel by train on the Roslagsbanan railway. There are twelve stops across its three lines in Täby. There are also bus connections that link to the Stockholm metro (subway). Täby also has a large network of local buses.
History of Täby Municipality
Early History: Vikings and the Middle Ages
During the first thousand years AD, Täby was part of the lands of the Svear people. This area was known as Svitjod. You can still find more than 37 runestones in Täby from this time. These stones are like ancient messages carved into rock.
In the northern part of Täby, you can see the remains of a causeway (a raised road over wet ground) from the 11th century. It is known as Jarlabankes bro. The cross on Täby's coat of arms comes from a runestone called the Risbylestenen. This stone is in the northern part of the municipality. It is believed to show the first signs of Christianity arriving in this part of Europe. During the Middle Ages, Täby was part of the Attundaland region.
From Rural Farms to a Growing Community
Täby was mostly a farming community until the 1800s. Most of the land was owned by rich noble families. In the 1500s and 1600s, much of eastern Täby was owned by the Brahe family, who lived at Rydboholm Manor (Rydboholms slott). Other noble families also owned land in Täby at different times. These included the Banér, Bååth, Roos, Sparre, Gyllenstierna, and Meijerfeldt families.
The Gyllenstierna and Meijerfeldt families owned Näsby Manor (Näsby Slott) in the southeast of Täby. By 1790, Täby had about 900 people. Most of them lived on one of the 36 farms. By the end of the 1800s, the population had grown to about 1,250.
The Arrival of the Railway and Modern Growth
In 1885, the Roslagsbanan railway was built. This railway connected Täby with the city of Stockholm. After this, Täby's population started to grow quickly. People began to build homes near the railway stations. In 1902, a wealthy engineer named Carl Robert Lamm bought the Näsby Manor, which had burned down. He rebuilt it.
Around the time of the First World War, many people from Stockholm bought small summer homes in eastern Täby. This area is now called Näsbypark. By 1919, Täby's population had reached 3,000. After the Second World War, Täby became more and more a suburb of Stockholm. By 1947, the population had grown to 8,584. Most people lived in the southern and eastern parts of the municipality.
In 1948, Täby was given the title of a "merchant town" (Swedish: köping). This title was used until a reform in 1971. This period also marked the start of major development in Täby, led by Mayor Gustaf Berg. By 1975, the population had increased to 41,307 people.
Today, Täby is seen as a desirable suburb of Stockholm. It is known for having one of the highest average incomes in Sweden.
