The Stockholm metro (called Stockholms tunnelbana in Swedish) is a big train system in Stockholm, Sweden. It helps people travel quickly underground and above ground. The first real metro line opened in 1950. But even before that, underground trams were used starting in 1933.

This metro system has 100 stations. About half of them (47) are underground, and the other half (53) are above ground. There are three main lines: Green, Red, and Blue. These lines connect many parts of Central Stockholm. In 2013, the Stockholm metro carried a huge number of passengers. About 328 million people rode the metro that year. This means almost 900,000 people used it every single day!

The metro system is about 105.7 kilometers (65.7 miles) long. It is owned by the Stockholm County Council through a company called Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). Another company, MTR Corporation, is in charge of running the trains every day.

The World's Longest Art Gallery

The Stockholm metro is famous for being like the "world's longest art gallery." More than 90 of its 100 stations are decorated with amazing art. This makes riding the metro a unique experience. You can see sculptures, paintings, and mosaics while you travel. It's like visiting an art museum underground!

Metro Lines and How They Work

The Stockholm metro has three main color-coded lines:

  • Green Line: This was the first line to open as a proper metro in 1950.
  • Red Line: This line was added later and helps connect different parts of the city.
  • Blue Line: Known for its unique cave-like stations, it's a favorite for art lovers.

Each line has many stations, making it easy to get around Stockholm. The trains run very often, especially during busy times. This helps people get to work, school, or other places quickly.

History of the Stockholm Metro

The idea of underground transport in Stockholm started a long time ago.

  • 1933: The first underground trams began running. These were like a step towards a full metro system.
  • 1950: The first official metro line opened. This was a big step for public transport in the city.
  • Over the years: More lines and stations were built. This helped the metro grow into the large system it is today.

Building the metro was a huge project. Workers had to dig tunnels and build stations underground. It took many years and a lot of effort to create this important transport network.
