A Look Back: Täby Church's History
The church was built a long, long time ago, in the late 1200s. At first, it was a simple square building. Around the mid-1300s, a small room called a vestry was added. About 100 years later, a front entrance area, known as the church porch, was built.
In the late 1400s, the flat wooden ceiling was changed to a curved, stone ceiling called a vaulted ceiling. The special artwork behind the altar, called the altarpiece, was made in the 1470s. You can also see an old runestone built into the wall of the church porch.
Amazing Wall Paintings
Täby Church is decorated with amazing wall paintings, also known as murals. These were painted by Albertus Pictor, who was one of Sweden's most important medieval artists. He passed away in 1511.
Pictor's paintings on the ceiling were made in the 1480s. Unlike many of his other works, these were never covered up with white paint. One very famous painting shows a man playing chess with Death. This unique image inspired a well-known scene in the movie The Seventh Seal by Ingmar Bergman. This chess motif is very rare; it's only known from one other place.
The main ideas for these paintings came from a book called Biblia Pauperum. This book showed important stories from the Holy Bible. The church and its beautiful paintings were carefully fixed up and cleaned in 1994.
Inside the Church: Furnishings
The altarpiece from the 1470s shows the scene of Golgotha, which is where Jesus was crucified. On one side of the altarpiece, there is a sculpture of St. Olof.
The pulpit, which is a raised stand where sermons are given, was made in the 1630s. It used to be in the chapel of the old Castle of Stockholm before it came to Täby Church.
