The Diocese of Stockholm is an important part of the Church of Sweden. Think of a diocese as a special area that a bishop looks after. The main church for this diocese is Storkyrkan, which is located in the beautiful Old Town of Stockholm. This diocese covers most of the Stockholm area. It was created in 1942. Before that, parts of Stockholm belonged to older dioceses like Strängnäs and Uppsala.

Understanding the Stockholm Diocese
A diocese is like a large church district. The Diocese of Stockholm helps organize the Church of Sweden's work in its area. It makes sure that churches and communities have support. The main church, Storkyrkan, is where important church events happen.
How the Diocese Was Formed
The Diocese of Stockholm is quite new compared to some other church areas. It was officially started in 1942. Before this, the city of Stockholm was split between two very old dioceses: Strängnäs and Uppsala. These older church areas existed long before Stockholm became a big city. The new Diocese of Stockholm brought these parts together.
Leaders of the Diocese
The leader of a diocese is called a bishop. The bishop helps guide the churches and people in their area. The current bishop of Stockholm is Andreas Holmberg. He became bishop on March 5, 2019.
Here is a list of all the bishops who have led the Diocese of Stockholm since it was created:
- Manfred Björkquist (1942–1954)
- Helge Ljungberg (1954–1971)
- Ingmar Ström (1971–1979)
- Lars Carlzon (1979–1984)
- Krister Stendahl (1984–1988)
- Henrik Svenungsson (1988–1998)
- Caroline Krook (1998–2009)
- Eva Brunne (2009–2019)
- Andreas Holmberg (2019–present)
How the Diocese is Organized
The Diocese of Stockholm is divided into smaller sections called kontrakts. These are similar to what other churches might call deaneries. There are 13 of these kontrakts in the diocese. They help manage the local churches and activities more closely.
Here are the names of the 13 kontrakts:
- Domkyrkokontraktet
- Södermalms Kontrakt
- Brännkyrka Kontrakt
- Birka Kontrakt
- Roslags Kontrakt
- Värmdö Kontrakt
- Södertörns Kontrakt
- Östermalms-Lidingö Kontrakt
- Enskede Kontrakt
- Spånga Kontrakt
- Sollentuna Kontrakt
- Solna Kontrakt
- Huddinge-Botkyrka Kontrakt
