Patric Hörnqvist (born January 1, 1987) is a former professional ice hockey player from Sweden. He played as a right wing for several teams in the NHL, including the Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Florida Panthers.

Patric Hörnqvist is famous for winning the Stanley Cup, ice hockey's biggest prize, twice as a player. He helped the Pittsburgh Penguins win in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, he even scored the winning goal in the final game against his old team, the Predators! After he stopped playing, he won the Stanley Cup again in 2024 as a scout for the Florida Panthers.

Playing Hockey

Starting in Sweden

Patric Hörnqvist was born in Sollentuna, Sweden. He started playing hockey in his hometown with local clubs like Gillbo IF and Solna SK. Later, he joined the junior team at Väsby IK Hockey.

In 2004, Patric followed his coach to Djurgårdens IF, a bigger team. He played a few games for their junior team. In 2005, he was chosen by the Nashville Predators in the NHL Draft. He was the very last player picked that year, 230th overall!

Patric made his debut in Sweden's top league, Elitserien, in 2005. He played 47 games and scored 5 goals. In 2007, he had a great season, scoring 23 goals. This earned him the "Rookie of the Year" award in the Swedish league.

Joining the Nashville Predators

In 2008, Patric moved to North America to play for the Nashville Predators. He spent most of his first year with their minor league team, the Milwaukee Admirals. He scored his first NHL goal on October 15, 2008.

Patric really shined in the 2009–10 season. He led the Predators in goals with 30 and tied for the most points with 51. He became a key player for the team. In 2013, he signed a new five-year contract with Nashville.

Winning with the Pittsburgh Penguins

On June 27, 2014, Patric Hörnqvist was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. This trade brought him to play alongside superstar Sidney Crosby. It was interesting because both were drafted in 2005, but Crosby was the first player picked, and Hörnqvist was the very last!

Patric quickly made an impact with the Penguins. He scored his first goal for the team in his very first game. He often played on the top line with Crosby.

In 2016, Patric scored his first "hat-trick" (three goals in one game) against the Arizona Coyotes. He also scored a hat-trick in the playoffs against the New York Rangers. That year, he helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup by beating the San Jose Sharks. This was his first championship!

The next year, in 2017, the Penguins made it to the finals again. On June 11, 2017, Patric scored the winning goal in Game 6 against his old team, the Nashville Predators. This goal secured the Stanley Cup for the Penguins for the second year in a row! He had 9 points in 19 playoff games that season.

In 2018, Patric signed a new five-year contract with the Penguins. On December 4, he scored three goals in just 2 minutes and 47 seconds against the Colorado Avalanche. This was the fastest hat-trick in Penguins history!

Time with the Florida Panthers

On September 24, 2020, Patric was traded to the Florida Panthers. He played for the Panthers for three seasons.

His last season, 2022–23, ended early because of an injury he got in December 2022. He played 22 games and had 3 points.

Patric Hörnqvist announced his retirement from playing hockey on June 29, 2023, after an 18-year career. However, he stayed involved in hockey! In 2024, he won his third Stanley Cup as a scout and development consultant for the Florida Panthers.
