The Egypt national football team, also known as The Pharaohs, plays for Egypt in international men's football. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) manages the team.
Egypt is a very old and successful team in African football. They have won the Africa Cup of Nations a record seven times. They also reached the final ten times. They are the only team to win the cup three times in a row (2006, 2008, and 2010). Their under-20 team also won a bronze medal in the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Egypt has played in the FIFA World Cup four times: in 1934, 1990, 2018, and 2026. They were the first team from Africa and the Middle East to play in the World Cup. For the 2026 World Cup, they qualified without losing any games. They also reached the knockout stage for the first time. They even won their first World Cup knockout match.
In 2010, Egypt was ranked 9th in the FIFA world rankings. This was a great year for them. They won the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and beat World Champions Italy in the FIFA Confederations Cup. As of June 11, 2026, the team is ranked 23rd.

The History of Egyptian Football
Early Olympic Games Appearances
The first Egyptian national football team started in 1920. It was the first African team to play in the Summer Olympics in Belgium. They lost their first game against Italy. Egypt played again at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. They surprised everyone by beating Hungary 3-0. However, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Sweden.
At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Egypt made history. They finished in fourth place. This made them the first African and non-European team to reach the semi-finals of a big global football event.
First World Cup Appearance (1934-1952)
Egypt has played in the FIFA World Cup four times. These were in 1934, 1990, 2018, and 2026. In 1934, Egypt was the first African country to qualify for the World Cup. They beat Mandatory Palestine with scores of 7-1 and 4-1.
In the 1930s, famous Egyptian players included Mohamed Latif and Mustafa Mansour. In their only match in the 1934 World Cup, they lost 4-2 to Hungary. Abdulrahman Fawzi scored both goals for Egypt.
Egypt also played in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. They finished 9th after losing 3-1 to Austria. Abdel Karim Sakr scored Egypt's only goal. At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, they won 7-1 against Turkey. However, they lost 2-1 to Denmark in extra time and were eliminated.
The team had stars like Yehia Emam and El-Sayed El-Dhizui. Egypt did not enter the 1950 World Cup qualifiers. They played in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. They beat Chile 5-4 in an exciting game. El-Sayed El-Dhizui scored three goals. They were later knocked out by Germany, losing 3-1.
Winning Early African Cup Titles and Olympic Success (1952-1970)
Egypt tried to qualify for the 1954 World Cup but did not make it. In 1957, they played in the very first Africa Cup of Nations. They won their semi-final against Sudan 2-1. Then, they won the final 4-0 to become champions!
Egypt won the AFCON again in 1959. Only three teams played in that tournament: Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. Egypt won all their games. For a few years (1958-1961), Egypt was part of a political union called the United Arab Republic. However, FIFA still counts these records for Egypt. The team played in the 1960 Summer Olympics under this name. They were eliminated in the first round.
Egypt did not enter the World Cup qualifiers in 1962, 1966, and 1970.
At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Egypt had their best Olympic result. They finished in fourth place. This matched their 1928 performance. They were in a group with Brazil, Czechoslovakia, and South Korea. They drew 1-1 with Brazil and beat South Korea 10-0. In the quarter-finals, they beat Ghana 5-1. They lost to Hungary in the semi-finals. They then lost the bronze medal match to Germany.
African Cup Challenges in the 1970s
Egypt tried to qualify for the 1974 World Cup but did not succeed. They had lost their first AFCON final in 1962. In the 1963 AFCON in Ghana, Egypt was in Group B. They beat Nigeria 6-3 and drew 2-2 with Sudan. They finished second in their group.
Egypt then played in the third-place match, winning 3-0 against Ethiopia. For the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt qualified but withdrew. This was due to political reasons with the host country, Tunisia. They also withdrew from the 1968 tournament.
In the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations in Sudan, Egypt topped their group. They beat Guinea 4-1 and Congo-Kinshasa 1-0, and drew 1-1 with Ghana. They reached the semi-finals but lost 2-1 to Sudan. In the third-place match, they beat Ivory Coast 3-1.
Egypt did not qualify for the AFCON in 1972. They lost to Morocco. However, they hosted the 1974 tournament and finished third. In the 1976 African Cup of Nations, Egypt reached the final round. They lost all their matches there. This was the first time Egypt lost three games in a row at the AFCON. They also failed to qualify for the 1978 AFCON.
African Titles and World Cup Return (1980-2006)
Egypt returned for the 1980 African Cup of Nations. They beat Ivory Coast and Tanzania but lost to hosts Nigeria. They reached the semi-finals, where Algeria beat them in a penalty shootout. Four years later, in the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt finished fourth. They beat Cameroon and Ivory Coast and drew with Togo.
In 1986, Egypt hosted the 1986 Africa Cup of Nations. They lost to Senegal but won their other group games. Egypt reached the final for the first time since 1962 and won the tournament! They qualified for the 1990 AFCON but lost all their group matches.
However, they also played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup that same year. They beat Algeria 1-0 in the playoffs to qualify. In the World Cup, they drew 1-1 with the Netherlands, scoring their first World Cup point. They also drew with Ireland and lost 1-0 to England.
The team lost both matches in the 1992 AFCON. In the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt beat Gabon 4-0 and drew with Nigeria. They lost 1-0 to Mali in the quarter-finals. Egypt won their fourth AFCON title in 1998, beating South Africa in the final.
In the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt was in Group C. They won one game, lost one, and drew one. They did not qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Golden Generation (2006-2010)
The Egyptian national football team had its most successful time between 2006 and 2010. They won three Africa Cup of Nations titles in a row, which was amazing!
Coach Hassan Shehata led this "Golden Generation." They had many talented players from Egypt. They hosted the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations and won the tournament after a penalty shootout. In the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt won their sixth title. They beat Cameroon 1-0 in the final.
Then, in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, the Pharaohs made history. They became the first African team to win three tournaments in a row. They won their seventh AFCON title by beating Ghana 1-0 in the final.
After the Golden Generation (2006-2019)
After their golden era, Egypt did not qualify for the next three AFCON tournaments. They returned for the 2017 tournament. They drew with Mali and won 1-0 against Uganda and Ghana. This made them group winners.
Egypt then faced Morocco in the quarter-finals. They beat them for the first time in 31 years. This set up a semi-final match against Burkina Faso. Mohamed Salah scored a goal, but Burkina Faso equalized. Veteran goalkeeper Essam El Hadary saved two penalties in the shootout. This earned Egypt a spot in the final. However, Egypt lost the final to Cameroon.
On October 8, 2017, Egypt qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. They topped their group over Uganda, Ghana, and Congo. In the World Cup, Egypt was grouped with Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, and hosts Russia. They lost their first game 1-0 to Uruguay. Salah was injured and did not play. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was named man of the match.
Salah returned for the game against Russia. Egypt lost 3-0, but Salah scored Egypt's first World Cup goal in 28 years. Egypt's last match was against Saudi Arabia. Essam El Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history at 45 years old. Salah scored again, but Egypt lost 2-1.
The coach, Héctor Cúper, was later replaced. The Egyptian Football Association also faced criticism.
Recent Years (2019-Present)
In the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt hosted the tournament. Despite winning all three group games, they were knocked out by South Africa in the round of 16. In the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt reached the final. They had tough games in the group stage. They beat Ivory Coast and Cameroon in penalty shootouts. This was their 10th final appearance, a new record. However, they lost the final to Senegal in a penalty shootout.
Egypt then qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, their fourth appearance. They had an undefeated winning streak in the qualifiers. During the 2026 World Cup group stage, Egypt's match against Iran in Seattle was a special "Pride Match." Egypt won their first-ever World Cup match against New Zealand. They topped Group G with four points, their best World Cup total. In the Round of 16, Egypt beat Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. This was their first win in a World Cup knockout match.
