The Egypt national football team, also known as The Pharaohs, plays football for Egypt in international matches. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) manages the team.

This team is the oldest national football team in Africa. They have won the Africa Cup of Nations an amazing seven times, which is a record! They have also played in the FIFA World Cup four times, being the first team from Africa and the Middle East to ever do so.

In 2001, Egypt's youth team won a bronze medal at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

In 2010, Egypt reached their highest ever FIFA world ranking at 9th place. This was a fantastic year for them, as they won the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and even beat World Champions Italy in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

History of the Pharaohs

The first Egyptian national football team was formed in 1920. They were the first African team to play in the Summer Olympics in Belgium. Their first game was a loss to Italy.

Egypt has played in the FIFA World Cup four times: in 1934, 1990, 2018, and 2026. They were the first African country to ever qualify for the World Cup! In 1934, they lost to Hungary 4-2, with Abdulrahman Fawzi scoring both goals for Egypt. In the 2026 World Cup, Egypt won their first-ever World Cup match against New Zealand.

Egypt first joined the Africa Cup of Nations in 1957. They won their first game against Sudan and then won the final 4-0! A year later, in 1959, Egypt won the AFCON again, staying undefeated in a tournament with only three teams.

From 1958 to 1961, Egypt was part of a political union with Syria called the United Arab Republic. However, FIFA still counts the football team's achievements as Egypt's.

Egypt reached the Africa Cup of Nations final in 1962 but lost. In 1963, they finished third. In the 1970 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt reached the semi-finals but lost to Sudan. They then won the third-place match against Ivory Coast. They hosted the tournament in 1974 and finished third again.

Egypt reached the semi-finals of the 1980 AFCON, losing to Algeria in a penalty shootout. In 1986, Egypt hosted the AFCON and won the tournament! They also played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, drawing against the Netherlands and Ireland, and scoring their first World Cup point.

After some mixed results in the early 1990s, Egypt won their fourth AFCON title in 1998, beating South Africa in the final.

Egypt hosted and won the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. They continued their winning streak, also becoming champions in 2008 and 2010! This was a truly golden era for Egyptian football.

Egypt qualified for the 2017 tournament and reached the final, but lost to Cameroon. On October 8, 2017, Egypt qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the World Cup, they were in a group with Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, and Russia. Mohamed Salah scored Egypt's first World Cup goal in 28 years. Essam El Hadary became the oldest player in the World Cup at 45 years old.

They then qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for their fourth appearance. During the 2026 World Cup group stage, Egypt won their first-ever World Cup match against New Zealand.
