Mohamed El Shenawy began playing football in his hometown club, El Hamoul SC. When he was 14, in 2002, he joined Al Ahly's youth team. He didn't play any league games for the main team before leaving the club in 2009.
Playing for Tala'ea El Gaish and Haras El Hodoud
After leaving Al Ahly, he joined another Egyptian Premier League team, Tala'ea El Gaish. While playing for El Gaish, El Shenawy also spent some time on loan with Haras El-Hodood.
Time at Petrojet
In 2013, El Shenawy moved to Petrojet. He played very well during the 2015–16 season. He had eleven "clean sheets" (games where he didn't let any goals in), which was the most in the league. He even went seven matches in a row without letting in a goal! His great performance made his old club, Al Ahly, want him back.
Returning to Al Ahly
Mohamed El Shenawy rejoined Al Ahly in July 2016. He quickly became the team's top goalkeeper. In January 2018, he kept five clean sheets in seven matches. This included a 1–0 win over Al-Masry in the 2017 Egyptian Super Cup. He also had the highest percentage of clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the Egyptian Premier League.
In his first four seasons back, he helped Al Ahly win the Egyptian Premier League four times in a row. He also helped them win the 2019–20 CAF Champions League. This win allowed Al Ahly to play in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup. In that tournament, he was a hero in the third-place playoff. The game ended 0–0, and it went to a penalty shootout. El Shenawy saved two penalties, helping his team win 3–2 against Palmeiras!
International Career
Mohamed El Shenawy has played for Egypt at different levels. He played for the under-18 team and later for the Egypt national under-20 football team in the 2007 African Youth Championship.
Senior National Team Debut
Since 2013, he was called up several times to the senior Egypt team. He made his first international appearance in March 2018 in a friendly match against Portugal. Even though Egypt lost 2–1, El Shenawy played very well. The national team's goalkeeping coach, Ahmed Nagy, praised him, saying he had a "great game" and deserved to be on the national team.
2018 FIFA World Cup
In May 2018, El Shenawy was chosen for Egypt’s team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in warm-up games before the tournament. He was chosen as the starting goalkeeper for Egypt's first match against Uruguay, even though it was only his fourth game for the national team. He played ahead of more experienced goalkeepers.
He was named "Man of the Match" for his great saves in the 1–0 loss to Uruguay. However, he chose not to accept the award for personal reasons. He kept his spot for Egypt's second group match against Russia, which they lost 3–1. Egypt was then out of the tournament. He also played in the African Cup of Nations in 2022, where Egypt reached the final but lost to Senegal.
