Mohamed El-Shenawy's Club Journey
Mohamed El-Shenawy began playing football in his hometown club, El-Hamoul SC. When he was 14, in 2002, he joined the youth team of Al Ahly, a very famous Egyptian club. However, he did not play any league games for their senior team at that time. He left Al Ahly in 2009.
Playing for Other Teams
After leaving Al Ahly, Mohamed joined another Egyptian Premier League team called Tala'ea El Gaish. While playing for them, he also spent some time on loan at Haras El-Hodoud.
In 2013, Mohamed El-Shenawy moved to Petrojet. He played very well during the 2015–16 season. He managed to keep his goal safe in many games, which means he had many "clean sheets." This great performance caught the eye of his old club, Al Ahly, and their manager, Martin Jol.
Returning to Al Ahly and Becoming a Star
Mohamed El-Shenawy rejoined Al Ahly in July 2016. He quickly became the team's main goalkeeper, taking over from Sherif Ekramy. In January 2018, he kept five clean sheets in just seven matches. This included a big 1–0 win against Al-Masry in the 2017 Egyptian Super Cup. He also had the highest percentage of clean sheets among all goalkeepers in the Egyptian Premier League.
In his first four seasons back at Al Ahly, Mohamed helped the club win the Egyptian Premier League four times in a row. He also helped them win the 2019–20 CAF Champions League. This win allowed Al Ahly to play in the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup. In that tournament, during the match for third place against Palmeiras, the game ended in a 0–0 draw. Mohamed El-Shenawy saved two penalties in the shootout, helping his team win 3–2 and secure third place.
More recently, in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Mohamed El-Shenawy played against Inter Miami. He made several amazing saves, including a powerful shot from Lionel Messi near the end of the game. The match finished in a 0–0 draw, thanks to his excellent goalkeeping.
Mohamed El-Shenawy's International Career
Mohamed El-Shenawy has represented Egypt at different levels. He played for the under-18 team and later for the Egypt national under-20 football team in the 2007 African Youth Championship.
Making His Senior Team Debut
From 2013 onwards, he was called up several times to the senior Egypt team. He finally made his international debut in March 2018 in a friendly match against Portugal. Even though Egypt lost 2–1, Mohamed received a lot of praise for how well he played. The national team's goalkeeping coach, Ahmed Nagy, said he had a "great game" and deserved to be on the national team.
Playing in the FIFA World Cup
In May 2018, Mohamed was chosen for Egypt's team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He played in warm-up matches before the tournament. He was then chosen as the starting goalkeeper for Egypt's first World Cup match against Uruguay. This was only his fourth game for the national team, and he played ahead of experienced goalkeepers like Essam El-Hadary.
Mohamed was named "Man of the Match" after the game against Uruguay because he made many important saves. However, he chose not to accept the award because of its sponsorship, which did not align with his personal beliefs.
He continued to play in Egypt's second group match against Russia. Egypt lost that game 3–1 and was eliminated from the tournament. Mohamed was also part of Egypt's team for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. The team reached the final but lost to Senegal in a penalty shootout.
