The Burkina Faso national football team is the official football team for men from Burkina Faso. It is controlled by the Burkinabé Football Federation. Before 1984, the team was known as the Upper Volta national football team. This was because the country's name was Upper Volta until it changed to Burkina Faso.
The team's best performance in the Africa Cup of Nations was in 2013. They reached the final match of the tournament. They also finished fourth in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, which they hosted.

Team History
The Burkina Faso team played its very first international match on April 13, 1960. This game was part of the Jeux de la Communauté in Madagascar. They won that first match with a score of 5–4 against Gabon.
Africa Cup of Nations Journey
Burkina Faso first played in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978. They didn't return to this big tournament until 1996. After that, they qualified for five tournaments in a row, from 1996 to 2004.
In 1998, when Burkina Faso hosted the tournament, they made it to the semi-finals. This was a great achievement for the team.
In the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, they were in a group with Ghana and Ivory Coast. Even though they drew their first game against Ivory Coast, they lost to Ghana and didn't move on. In 2012, they lost all their matches and their coach, Paulo Duarte, was replaced.
A new coach, Paul Put, took over in March 2012. Under him, Burkina Faso did very well in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. They won their group but lost to Nigeria in the final. This was their best result ever in the tournament. The team also earned third place in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
World Cup Qualifying Efforts
Burkina Faso first tried to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1978. They won against Mauritania but then lost to Ivory Coast. They tried again in 1990 but lost in the first round.
They didn't play in the 1994 competition. In 1998, they qualified for the final group stage but didn't earn any points. They also reached the group stage in 2002 but didn't advance.
In the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, they had a strong performance. They reached the final round against Algeria. Burkina Faso won the first game 3–2 at home. However, they lost the second game 1–0 away. Even though the total score was 3-3, Burkina Faso missed out on the 2014 FIFA World Cup because of the away goals rule. This rule means the team that scores more goals away from home wins if the total score is tied.
Team Nickname: The Stallions
The team is known as Les Etalons, which means "The Stallions". This nickname comes from a famous story about Princess Yennenga and her legendary horse. When the team plays, their fans sometimes bring a percussion band. This band often makes sounds that sound like galloping horses.
