Hossam Hassan Hassanein (Arabic: حسام حسن حسنين; born 10 August 1966) is a famous Egyptian former professional football player. He played as a striker, meaning he was a forward who scored many goals. Today, he is the coach of the Egyptian national team.
Hossam Hassan is known as Egypt's all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 177 games for his country. His twin brother, Ibrahim, also played professional football. They often played on the same teams throughout their long careers.
Many people consider Hossam Hassan one of the best players in African football history. He has played in more international matches than almost anyone else, ranking 15th in the world for men's international football appearances. He is also the 2nd highest goal scorer in the history of the Egyptian Premier League.

Hossam Hassan's Club Career
Hossam Hassan spent most of his playing career in Cairo, Egypt. He played for his hometown club, Al Ahly, starting when he was just 18 years old. He stayed with the club for many years, winning a total of 25 titles. These titles included 11 league championships.
Playing Abroad
Hossam also played for a short time in Switzerland and Greece. While playing for Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland, he scored four goals in one game against Celtic in a European competition.
Time at Zamalek
In 2000, when he was 34, Hossam Hassan moved from Al Ahly to Zamalek. With Zamalek, he won three more Egyptian Premier League titles. He also helped the team win the 2002 CAF Champions League, which is a major African club competition. He scored 50 goals for Zamalek in all competitions.
Later Career and Retirement
After his time at Zamalek, he played for other Egyptian clubs like Al-Masry Club, Tersana, and Al-Ittihad Al-Sakndary. He continued to score goals even as he got older. Hossam Hassan retired from playing football when he was almost 42 years old. He often played alongside his twin brother, Ibrahim, throughout his career.
Hossam Hassan's International Career
Hossam Hassan played for the Egyptian national team in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He helped his team get two draws in the tournament. His brother Ibrahim was also a key player in the team.
When he was 40 years old, Hossam Hassan was the captain of the national team at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. He played three games and scored one goal, helping Egypt win the tournament. This was his third time winning the continental competition with Egypt.
Hossam Hassan's Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Hossam Hassan began a career in coaching. In 2008, he became both the general manager and coach for his former club, Al-Masry. He later coached other teams like Telecom Egypt.
Coaching Zamalek
In 2009, Hossam Hassan became the manager of Zamalek. He helped the team improve their position in the league, moving them from 14th place to second. He only lost one game and drew another during his time there before leaving the club.
Coaching Jordan and Other Clubs
He also had short coaching periods with clubs like Ismaily, Al Masry, and Misr Lel Makkasa. He then became the head coach of the Jordan national team. He led Jordan through the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification matches.
After coaching Jordan, he returned to Egypt to coach Zamalek again, and then Al Ittihad Alexandria. From 2015 to 2018, he coached Al Masry, leading them to the 2017 Egypt Cup Final and the semi-finals of the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup. He later managed Pyramids and Smouha.
He returned to coach Al Ittihad Alexandria in October 2020. After some time, he left the club and returned to Al-Masry for a fourth time in May 2022. He left again at the end of that season but came back for a fifth time in December 2022. He was later dismissed in May 2023 after some disagreements during a match.
Coaching the Egyptian National Team
In February 2024, Hossam Hassan was appointed as the manager of the Egyptian national team. He had briefly coached Modern Future FC before taking on this important role.
Personal Life
Hossam Hassan has four children. During the 2011 Egyptian revolution, he openly supported the president at the time, Hosni Mubarak. He and his brother Ibrahim even led marches to show their support.
