Hossam Hassan Hassanein is a famous Egyptian football player and coach. He was born on August 10, 1966. Hossam played as a striker, which means he was great at scoring goals. He is known as Egypt's all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 177 games!
Hossam is considered one of the best players in African football history. He also has a twin brother, Ibrahim, who was also a professional footballer. They played on the same teams for most of their amazing careers. Hossam is now the coach of the Egyptian national team.

Hossam's Club Career: Playing for Top Teams
Hossam Hassan spent most of his playing career in Cairo, Egypt. He played for two of the biggest clubs there: Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Starting Strong at Al Ahly
Hossam started playing for Al Ahly when he was just 18 years old. He stayed with the club for many years, winning a lot of titles. He helped Al Ahly win 11 league titles, which is a huge achievement! He was also one of only two players to score goals in the famous Cairo derby for both Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Playing Abroad: Switzerland and UAE
Hossam also played football in other countries. He played for PAOK in Greece and Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland. While playing for Neuchâtel Xamax, he scored four goals in one game against Celtic in the 1991–92 UEFA Cup. This was a very memorable moment! After his time abroad, he returned to Al Ahly.
In 2000, when he was 34, Hossam moved to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates for a short time.
Success with Zamalek
Later in 2000, Hossam joined Zamalek, Al Ahly's biggest rival. Even at 34, he continued to be a top scorer. With Zamalek, he won three more Egyptian Premier League titles. He also helped them win the Egypt Cup and the Egyptian Super Cup.
Hossam also achieved success with Zamalek in African competitions. They won the 2002 CAF Champions League and the 2003 CAF Super Cup. He scored 50 goals for Zamalek in all the games he played.
Later Career and Retirement
After Zamalek, Hossam played for other Egyptian clubs like Al-Masry, Tersana, and Al-Ittihad Al-Sakndary. He kept scoring goals until he retired at almost 42 years old. He often played alongside his twin brother, Ibrahim, throughout his career.
Hossam's International Career: Playing for Egypt
Hossam Hassan played a very important role for the Egyptian national team. He played in the 1990 FIFA World Cup, where Egypt had two draws and a close 0-1 loss to England. His brother Ibrahim was also a key player in that team.
Winning the Africa Cup of Nations
Hossam played in seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He was the captain of the national team in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations. Even at 40 years old, he played three games and scored one goal, helping Egypt win the tournament. This was his third time winning this big African competition!
Hossam's Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Hossam Hassan became a football coach. He has managed many clubs in Egypt and even coached a national team.
Early Coaching Roles
Hossam started his coaching career in 2008 with his former club, Al-Masry. He also coached Itesalat.
Managing Zamalek
In 2009, he became the manager of Zamalek. He quickly improved the team's performance, moving them from 14th place to second in the league. He only lost one game and drew another during his time there before leaving the club.
Coaching Jordan's National Team
Hossam also had the chance to coach the Jordan national team. He led them during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification matches.
Returning to Egyptian Clubs and National Team
He later returned to coach several Egyptian clubs, including Al Ittihad Alexandria and Al Masry multiple times. In 2017, he led Al Masry to the 2017 Egypt Cup Final.
In February 2024, Hossam Hassan was appointed as the manager of the Egyptian national team, which is a very important job in Egyptian football.
