The Sierra Leone national football team, also known as the Leone Stars, plays for Sierra Leone in the sport of association football. The team is managed by the Sierra Leone Football Association. They have proudly qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations three times!

History of the Leone Stars

The Leone Stars played their very first game on August 10, 1949. They faced Nigeria at home in Freetown and lost 2-0. In 1954, they played against another British colony, Gold Coast, and lost 2-0 away from home.

On April 22, 1961, they hosted Nigeria again but lost 4-2. Their first game against a country that was not a British colony was on November 12, 1966, against Liberia. They earned their first draw, a 1-1 tie. A week later, they lost 2-0 in Liberia.

On January 13, 1971, Sierra Leone played its first match against a team from outside Africa. They faced West Germany's B-team at home and lost 1-0. The team's first game outside Africa was against an Asian team, China, on April 5, 1974. They lost 4-1 in China.

In August 2014, the Sierra Leone Football Association had to stop all football matches. This was done to help control a health crisis happening in the country. Players from Sierra Leone who played in other countries, like Michael Lahoud in the United States, sometimes faced challenges. Other players were worried and did not want to swap shirts or shake hands. The national team could not play their home games in Sierra Leone and had to play them in other countries.
