The Guinea-Bissau national football team is the official men's football team for Guinea-Bissau. They are often called the Djurtus. The team is managed by the Football Federation of Guinea-Bissau.

This team has never played in the FIFA World Cup. However, they have made it to the Africa Cup of Nations four times. Their first time was in 2017. The team is a member of both FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

History of Guinea-Bissau Football

Learn about the journey of the Guinea-Bissau national football team. They have worked hard to compete in big tournaments.

World Cup Qualifying Journey

Guinea-Bissau first tried to qualify for the 1998 World Cup in France. In their first match, they played against Guinea at home. They won that game 3–2. However, in the second match, Guinea won 3–2, making the total score 5–4. This meant Guinea-Bissau did not move forward.

For a long time, they didn't get past the first round of World Cup qualifiers. But in the 2022 qualifiers, they finally made it past the first stage. They beat São Tomé and Príncipe with a total score of 3–1. Joseph Mendes scored all three goals for them!

Africa Cup of Nations Appearances

Guinea-Bissau first tried to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994. They beat Cape Verde but didn't earn any points in the next round. Later, they had to pull out of the 1996 competition. This led to them being banned from the 1998 tournament.

They faced more challenges in later years. They were banned again in 2008 for not paying fees to CAF. In 2012, they won only one game.

A big moment came in the 2017 qualifiers. Even though they were the lowest-ranked team in their group, they earned enough points to qualify! They finished ahead of Congo, Zambia, and Kenya.

In their first Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, they tied 1–1 with Gabon. Juary Soares scored a goal in the last minute! This was their only point, and they were out after the group stage.

They qualified again for the 2019 tournament. They had one draw and two losses, so they didn't make it past the group stage that time either.

On March 30, 2021, Guinea-Bissau won their final qualifying match against Congo. Goals from Piqueti, Frédéric Mendy, and Jorginho helped them qualify for their third Africa Cup of Nations in a row! They also qualified for the 2023 tournament.
