Mohamed's Early Football Journey
Mohamed Abdelwahab was born in a small town called Faiyum in Egypt. He started his professional football career with a team named Aluminium Nag Hammâdi. While playing there, he caught the attention of Hassan Shehata, who was the coach for the national youth team at the time.
Joining the Youth Team
Coach Shehata picked Mohamed for the Egyptian youth team. This team went on to win the 2003 African Cup of Nations, which was held in Mali. This was a great achievement for Mohamed and his team!
Playing in the UAE
Mohamed played really well in the World Youth Championship in the United Arab Emirates. Because of his excellent skills, a team from the UAE called Al Dhafra Club signed him for four years.
However, Mohamed didn't play any games for Al Dhafra Club. Instead, he spent his first year on loan to another team, ENPPI.
First Call-Up to the National Team
While playing for ENPPI, Mohamed was chosen to join the main Egyptian national team. The coach at that time was Italian coach Marco Tardelli. Mohamed scored a goal in his very first game for the national team. This game was a qualifier for the 2006 World Cup against Sudan.
Time with Al Ahly
After his time with ENPPI, Mohamed joined Al Ahly on a two-year loan. In his first season with Al Ahly, he didn't play much. The coach, Manuel José, mostly used another player named Gilberto.
A Big Chance in the Champions League
Mohamed's big opportunity came in the 2005 African Champions League final. This was a huge game against Etoile Sahel from Tunisia. Just ten minutes into the game, Gilberto got injured and had to leave the field. Mohamed Abdelwahab was brought in to replace him.
He made a big impact! Mohamed helped set up the second goal for Al Ahly, scored by Osama Hosny. Al Ahly won the game 3–0 and became the champions of Africa.
Winning More Trophies
Mohamed became a key player for Coach Hassan Shehata's national team. He helped Egypt win the 2006 African Cup of Nations again, this time on their home ground. He even scored a penalty in the shootout against Ivory Coast, which helped Egypt win the cup.
His strong performances also helped Al Ahly win their second local league title in a row. They also won the Egyptian Cup and the CAF Super Cup in the same season.
Mohamed's Passing
Mohamed Abdelwahab sadly passed away on August 31, 2006. He collapsed during a morning training session with his club, Al Ahly. He was quickly taken to 'Egypt International Hospital' in Dokki, Cairo. However, the 22-year-old player could not be saved.
Egyptian doctors later said that Mohamed's death was caused by a heart defect.
Remembering Mohamed
National coach Hassan Shehata and many players traveled to Mohamed's hometown, Faiyum, to attend his funeral. As a way to honor him, his jersey number, #3, was retired by his club. This means no other player at Al Ahly will wear that number again.
