Mohamed Barakat Ahmed Bastamy (born 7 September 1976) is a famous Egyptian former professional football player. He was known for playing as a right winger or attacking midfielder. Barakat played for the Egyptian club Al Ahly and the Egypt national team.

Many people thought Barakat was one of the most talented players in Africa. He was great at running with the ball from the middle of the field. This often confused the other team's defenders. He also worked hard all over the field, helping both in defense and attack. Because of his amazing skills, fans called him The Mercurial.

Barakat was at his best in 2005 and 2006. He helped his club, Al Ahly, win the CAF Champions League 2005 and CAF Champions League 2006. He also helped Egypt win their fifth African Cup of Nations in 2006.

Mohamed Barakat's Football Journey

Starting His Career

Barakat began his football journey at a club called Sekka. He really started to shine when he joined Al-Ismaily. This club was one of the few in Egypt that could challenge the big teams like Al Ahly and Zamalek.

Playing in Gulf Countries

In 2002, Barakat was named the Egyptian Footballer of the Year. He then moved to Ahly Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. He helped them win the Arab Club Championship in 2003. Barakat scored two goals in that tournament, including the winning goal in the final match. After that, he played for Alarabi in Qatar.

His Time at Al Ahly

Barakat came back to Egypt in 2004 to join Al Ahly. Some people said that when he played with Mohamed Aboutrika and Emad Moteab, they formed the best attacking group in African Soccer. They were even called "The Bermuda Triangle" because they were so good together.

Mohamed Barakat won the BBC African Footballer award in 2005. He beat famous players like Samuel Eto'o and Obafemi Martins. More than 15,000 people voted for him. He was also named the best player in Africa's club competition that year. He scored 7 goals in the CAF Champions League 2005.

In 2013, Barakat started the season with some difficult games. But soon, he got back to his top form. He scored the winning goal in the CAF Super Cup 2013, helping Al Ahly win the cup. He also scored a penalty goal and made an assist in a CAF Champions League match.

Later, there were talks about him retiring because he was 37 years old. But then, Barakat scored two amazing goals in an Egyptian league match. People thought he could play for a few more seasons. However, three weeks later, Barakat announced he would retire at the end of that season. This brought an end to his impressive career.

Brief Retirement and Return

After the sad Port Said Stadium clashes on 1 February 2012, Barakat decided to retire from football. His teammates Emad Motaeb and Mohamed Aboutrika also retired. But Barakat changed his mind and returned to play for Al Ahly again.

Playing for Egypt

Barakat played his first game for the Egyptian national team in June 2000 against South Korea. He played in 4 matches during the 2002 African Cup of Nations. He also played in all of Egypt's matches when they won the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.

Barakat finished his international career on 18 November 2009. This was after Egypt's dream of reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup ended when Algeria won 1–0. He talked about his decision to stop playing for the national team on 11 August 2010.
