Mohamed Barakat's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Barakat began his football journey at a club called Sekka. He really started to shine when he joined Al-Ismaily. This club was one of the few in Egypt that could compete with the big teams like Al Ahly and Zamalek.
Playing in Gulf Countries
In 2002, Mohamed Barakat was named the Egyptian Footballer of the Year. After that, he moved to Ahly Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. He helped them win the Arab Club Championship in 2003. Barakat scored two goals in that tournament, including the winning goal in the final match. Later, he played for Alarabi in Qatar.
Success with Al Ahly
Barakat came back to Egypt in 2004 and joined Al Ahly. Many people said that he, along with Mohamed Aboutrika and Emad Moteab, formed a very strong attacking group. They were even called "The Bermuda Triangle" because they were so hard for other teams to stop.
Mohamed Barakat won the BBC African Footballer award in 2005. He beat famous players like Samuel Eto'o and Obafemi Martins. More than 15,000 people voted for him. He was also named the best player in Africa's club competition that same year. He scored 7 goals in the CAF Champions League 2005.
In 2013, Barakat started the season a bit slowly. But he soon got back to his best form. He scored the winning goal in the 2013 CAF Super Cup, helping Al Ahly win the cup. He also scored a penalty goal and made an assist in a CAF Champions League 2013 match. There were talks about him retiring because he was 37 years old. However, he then scored two more goals in the Egyptian league. Fans thought he could play for one or two more seasons because he looked so young on the field. But just a few weeks later, Barakat announced he would retire at the end of that season. This brought an end to his amazing career.
Retirement and Return
After a difficult event in Egyptian football in February 2012, Barakat decided to retire. His teammates Emad Motaeb and Mohamed Aboutrika also made this decision. However, he changed his mind and returned to play for Al Ahly again.
Playing for His Country
Barakat first played for the Egyptian national team, known as the Pharaohs, in June 2000 against South Korea. He played in 4 matches during the 2002 African Cup of Nations. He also played in all of Egypt's matches when they won the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.
Barakat finished his international career on November 18, 2009. This was after Egypt's dream of reaching the 2010 FIFA World Cup ended when they lost to Algeria. He spoke to the press about his decision to stop playing for the national team in August 2010.
