Pablo Prigioni (born May 17, 1977) is a former professional basketball player from Argentina and Italy. He is now an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Pablo played as a point guard. He was part of the senior Argentina national basketball team that won a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Pablo Prigioni made history in the NBA. He was the oldest rookie to debut in the league. He joined the New York Knicks in 2012 when he was 35 years old. Before playing in the NBA, he was a top player in Europe, especially in Spain. He played four seasons in the NBA. After his playing career, he started coaching in 2017.

Pablo's Basketball Journey

Early Career in Argentina and Spain

Pablo Prigioni started his professional basketball career in Argentina. He played for teams like Ramallo, Belgrano San Nicolás, and Obras Sanitarias from 1995 to 1999.

In 1999, Pablo moved to Spain. He joined the Spanish club Fuenlabrada. After two years, he played for Lucentum Alicante until 2003.

Success with Baskonia

In 2003, Pablo joined Baskonia, a well-known team in the EuroLeague. He had a lot of success there. With Baskonia, he won:

  • 3 Spanish King's Cups (in 2004, 2006, and 2009)
  • 4 Spanish Supercups (from 2005 to 2008)
  • The Spanish League championship in 2008

Time with Real Madrid

After his first time with Baskonia, Pablo joined Real Madrid in 2009. He played there for two seasons.

Return to Baskonia

In 2011, Pablo Prigioni returned to Baskonia. He signed a one-year deal with his former team.

Playing in the NBA

New York Knicks (2012–2015)

On July 24, 2012, Pablo Prigioni signed with the New York Knicks. He was 35 years old when he made his NBA debut on November 2, 2012. This made him the oldest rookie in NBA history!

During the 2012–13 season, he became the starting point guard for the Knicks. He helped the team reach the second round of the playoffs. This was the first time the Knicks had done that in 13 years.

Houston Rockets (2015)

In February 2015, Pablo was traded to the Houston Rockets. He played for them for a short period.

Los Angeles Clippers (2015–2016)

In August 2015, Pablo signed with the Los Angeles Clippers. He had a great game on January 13, 2016. He made eight steals, which was almost the team record! On April 8, 2016, he scored 13 points and had seven rebounds and seven assists in a win.

He briefly returned to the Houston Rockets in 2016 for preseason games.

Retirement and Jersey Retirement

On December 5, 2016, Pablo Prigioni returned to Baskonia for a third time. He officially retired from playing professional basketball on January 9, 2017.

During his career, he played 10 seasons in the EuroLeague. He averaged 6.1 points and 4.3 assists per game. In the NBA, he played four seasons. He averaged 3.5 points and 2.8 assists per game.

On January 15, 2017, Baskonia honored Pablo by retiring his jersey number 5. This means no other player on Baskonia will wear that number.

Coaching Career

Baskonia (2017)

After retiring as a player, Pablo Prigioni started his coaching career. On June 16, 2017, he became the head coach for Baskonia. However, he stepped down on October 26, 2017.

Brooklyn Nets (2018–2019)

On April 24, 2018, Pablo joined the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach. The Nets made it to the NBA playoffs in the 2018–19 season.

Minnesota Timberwolves (2019–present)

On June 25, 2019, Pablo Prigioni was hired as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He coached the team in the 2019 Las Vegas Summer League. He was also put in charge of the team's offense for the next season. He continues to be an assistant coach for the Timberwolves.

Argentina National Team (2022–present)

On September 1, 2022, Pablo Prigioni became the head coach of the Argentina men's national basketball team.

Playing for Argentina

Pablo Prigioni was an important player for the Argentine senior men's national basketball team. He played in the 2006 FIBA World Championship.

He won several medals with his national team:

  • Silver medals at the 2003 FIBA Americas Championship and 2007 FIBA Americas Championship.
  • A bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
  • A bronze medal at the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship.
  • A gold medal at the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.
