Qatar is a country that has taken part in the Summer Olympic Games ten times. They first joined the Olympics in 1984. Qatar has never competed in the Winter Olympic Games.

For a long time, Qatar had not won any gold medals. This changed at the 2020 Summer Olympics! Fares El-Bakh won Qatar's first gold medal in weightlifting. Soon after, Mutaz Essa Barshim won another gold medal in men's high jump. Besides these two gold medals, Qatar has also earned two silver medals and five bronze medals.

For many years, Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia and Brunei, was one of the few countries that had never sent female athletes to the Olympics. In 2010, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) encouraged these countries to include women. The Qatar Olympic Committee then announced they hoped to send up to four female athletes to the 2012 London Summer Olympics. They successfully sent four women to compete that year!

The Qatar Olympic Committee was officially started in 1979. The IOC recognized them in 1980, which meant Qatar could then send athletes to the Olympic Games.
