Brunei, also known as Brunei Darussalam, first took part in the Olympic Games in 1988. At that time, they sent only one official, but no athletes.

The country then sent athletes to the Summer Olympic Games in 1996, 2000, and 2004. Each time, only one athlete represented Brunei. Brunei has never won an Olympic medal. They have also never competed in the Winter Olympic Games.

In 2008, Brunei planned to join the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, they were not allowed to compete. This happened on the opening day because they did not register their athletes with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

As of 2010, Brunei was one of only three countries that had never sent a female athlete to the Olympics. The other two were Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The IOC announced in 2010 that it would encourage these countries to let women compete.

At the first Youth Olympics in 2010, Brunei sent three people. This team included two girls: Amanda Jia Xin Liew for swimming and Maziah Mahusin for hurdling.

In March 2012, Brunei told the IOC that Maziah Mahusin would compete in London. Even if she didn't meet the top qualifying scores, she could still compete. This is thanks to a rule called "universality." This rule lets countries send athletes to the Olympics if they don't have anyone who has already qualified.

Brunei's National Olympic Committee was created in 1984. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in the same year.
