Taliqua Clancy, born on June 25, 1992, is an amazing Australian athlete. She plays both volleyball and beach volleyball. Taliqua made history as the first Indigenous Australian volleyball player to compete for Australia at the Olympic Games. She is known for her strong blocking skills on the left side of the court.

Early Life and Training

Taliqua Clancy was born in Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia. Her family has Indigenous Australian heritage from the Wulli Wulli and Goreng Goreng peoples. She lived in Kingaroy for the first 15 years of her life.

Choosing Beach Volleyball

Taliqua was a talented athlete from a young age. She received a scholarship offer for netball from the Australian Institute of Sport. However, she chose a different path. Instead, she accepted a scholarship for beach volleyball at the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Moving for Training

When Taliqua was 17, she moved to Adelaide. She joined the national beach volleyball program at the Australian Institute of Sport. This move helped her train and become a top player. In 2019, she moved back to Queensland and is now based in Brisbane.

Taliqua's Professional Career

Taliqua Clancy has had a very successful career in beach volleyball. She has competed in many major tournaments around the world. Her hard work and talent have earned her many medals.

Taliqua competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She teamed up with Louise Bawden for this event. They played very well and reached the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Taliqua played at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. Her partner was Mariafe Artacho del Solar. They had a fantastic start, winning all three of their first matches without losing a single set.

  • They beat Grenada (21–2, 21–11).
  • They beat Scotland (21–9, 21–9).

Advancing to the Finals

After winning their group, they moved to the quarter-finals. They easily won against Rwanda (21–9, 21–8). In the semi-finals, they faced Vanuatu. It was a tough match, but they won in three sets (21–19, 16–21, 15–9).

Winning Silver

In the gold medal match, they played against Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan. It was a very close game, but the Canadian team won (19–21, 20–22). Taliqua and Mariafe earned a silver medal, which was a great achievement at their first Commonwealth Games together.

Hamburg 2019 World Championships

Taliqua and Mariafe also competed in the 2019 World Championships in Hamburg, Germany. They started strong, winning their first match against Mauritius (21–5, 21–6). They then had a close loss to a Dutch team (19–21, 22–24).

Overcoming Challenges

In a crucial match, they won against a strong American team (21–19, 24–22). This win helped them move to the elimination rounds. During their first elimination match, Mariafe got an injury to her left knee. Despite this, they bravely won against Canada (21–15, 21–19).

Bronze Medal Victory

Even with Mariafe's injury, they decided to keep playing. They won a very close three-set match against Switzerland (21–16, 21–23, 15–9). This put them in their first World Championships quarter-final. They continued to show amazing spirit, winning their quarter-final against Russia (24–22, 21–14).

They lost their semi-final match to the American team of Alix Klineman and April Ross (15–21, 18–21). However, they didn't give up. They went on to win the bronze medal match against another Swiss team (21–18, 22–20). This was one of their most memorable achievements.

Tokyo 2020 Olympics

On August 4, 2021, Taliqua and Mariafe achieved a big upset. They defeated the world's number-one team from Canada in the quarter-finals. The next day, August 5, they won against Latvia in straight sets. This victory sent them to the gold medal match.

Olympic Silver Medal

In the gold medal match, they played against the United States team. They lost this match but proudly earned a silver medal for Australia. This was a huge moment in their careers.
