1906 Intercalated Games

Norway first joined the Summer Olympics in 1900. Since then, Norwegian athletes have competed in almost every Games. They missed the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because they joined a boycott led by the United States.

For a long time, people thought Norway also missed the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, United States. However, in the early 2000s, it was found that two wrestlers, Charles Ericksen and Bernhoff Hansen, were actually Norwegian citizens. Even though they lived in America and their medals were first given to the United States, they were still Norwegian. They both won gold medals in wrestling at those 1904 Games.

Norwegian athletes have won a total of 160 medals at the Summer Olympics. The sports where they have won the most medals are sailing and shooting.

At the Winter Olympic Games, Norway has won an amazing 405 medals in total. This includes 148 gold medals! This is much more than any other country in Winter Olympic history. More than half of these medals come from cross-country skiing and speed skating. Norway is one of only three countries that have won more medals at the Winter Games than at the Summer Games. The other two are Austria and Liechtenstein.

Norway's official Olympic Committee was started and recognized in 1900.

Norway's Olympic History

The 1904 Summer Olympics Mystery

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) first thought that Norwegian-American wrestlers Charles Ericksen and Bernhoff Hansen competed for the United States. Both were Norwegian immigrants living in the US, and each won a gold medal.

But in 2012, historians in Norway found important papers. These papers showed that Ericksen did not become an American citizen until March 22, 1905. Hansen was still listed as a "foreigner" as late as 1925, meaning he likely never became an American citizen.

Because of this new information, the historians asked for the athletes to be recognized as Norwegians. In May 2013, the Norwegian Olympic Committee officially asked the IOC to change the wrestlers' nationality in their medal records. Finally, in July 2021, the IOC updated its official database. Now, Ericksen and Hansen are officially recognized as having competed for Norway!
