Beatrice Grant (1761-1845) was a Scottish author who lived most of her life in the Highlands of Scotland. She wrote books and articles to help young people and families learn and improve their lives.

Who Was Beatrice Grant?
Her Early Years
Beatrice Grant was born in Kilmartin, Scotland, on September 2, 1761. Her father, Captain Neil Campbell, was a soldier who even served in the Siege of Havana. Sadly, her mother, Matilda Campbell, passed away when Beatrice was only eight years old.
Beatrice grew up in a very large family. She had four younger full siblings. Later, her father remarried, and she gained many half-siblings from his second marriage. In total, she had 15 siblings, making for a busy household!
Becoming a Writer
In 1784, Beatrice married Rev. Patrick Grant. He was a minister in the Scottish Highlands, in a place called Duthil. They had four children together: Anna, Matilda, Georgina, and George.
After her husband passed away in 1809, Beatrice moved to Inverness. She took her younger children with her. She also ran a school for young ladies there.
What She Wrote About
Beatrice Grant published her first book in 1812. It was a guide to help new mothers. Her next three books were called Popular Models and Impressive Warnings for the Sons and Daughters of Industry. These books were even dedicated to the Prince Regent, who later became King George IV.
Many of Beatrice's writings were stories. She often wrote for working-class readers. Her goal was to share helpful information and encourage good behavior in young people. She didn't just write books. She also wrote for magazines like The Cheap Magazine, which was for working-class families. She also wrote for more famous magazines like La Belle Assemblée, New Monthly Magazine, and Repository of Arts.
A poet named Dorothea Primrose Campbell admired Beatrice's work. In 1816, she wrote a poem honoring Beatrice. It was called To Mrs Grant of Duthell. On Reading Her "Intellectual Education".
Her Final Years
Beatrice Grant passed away in Nairn, Scotland, on February 20, 1845. She was 83 years old. She is buried in the Chapelyard graveyard in Inverness. She shares a grave with two of her daughters.
