Duntrune Castle is a very old castle found in Scotland, on the north side of Loch Crinan. It sits across from the small village of Crinan. Many people believe it is the oldest castle on mainland Scotland that has always had people living in it. It is also a special "category B listed building," which means it's an important historical site.

History of Duntrune Castle

Who Built Duntrune Castle?

Duntrune Castle was first built in the 1200s by the MacDougall clan. They built several castles in this area, including a strong fort called Dunollie Castle near Oban.

Changes in Ownership

Over time, the Clan Campbell took control of Duntrune Castle. In the 1600s, another rival group, the MacDonalds, led by Alasdair Mac Colla, tried to take the castle. This was known as a "siege," where they surrounded the castle to try and force the people inside to give up.

Later Owners and Renovations

The Campbells sold Duntrune Castle in 1792 to the Malcolms of Poltalloch family. Today, the castle is owned by Robin Neill Malcolm, who is the current chief of the Clan Malcolm. The oldest part of the castle, its outer wall, is from the 1200s. However, the main part of the castle, which is a tall building called a "tower house," was built later in the 1600s. The castle was updated and repaired in 1954 to keep it in good condition.
