Biography
Beatriz was born in Rosario, a city in Santa Fe Province, Argentina. Her father, Ángel Guido, was a well-known architect who designed the National Flag Memorial. Her mother, Berta Eirin, was an actress from Uruguay.
Beatriz studied at the University of Buenos Aires. She also traveled to Italy and France to continue her studies. There, she explored the ideas of some important thinkers. She wrote articles about these ideas for cultural magazines. Around 1950, she even started translating books from French into Spanish.
Her first novel, La casa del ángel (which means The House of the Angel), won an award in 1954. This book became a bestseller, and many more successful novels followed. Some of her other popular books include La caída (The Fall), Fin de fiesta (End of the Party), and El incendio y las visperas (The Fire and the Eve). These books made her very well-known.
La casa del ángel was later made into a movie by Leopoldo Torre Nilsson. This was the first time Beatriz worked with him. They became a creative team, working together on 18 films over more than twenty years. Their partnership lasted until his death in 1978. After that, she worked with other film directors. Many of the movie scripts she co-wrote were based on her own novels and short stories.
Beatriz also wrote some plays for the theater and articles for newspapers. She had strong opinions against the government of Juan Perón. Because of this, some people called her a "right-wing writer" or a "false aristocrat."
In 1983, she won the National Literature Prize. In 1984, she received the Konex Merit Diploma for her work in literature. That same year, she was named a Cultural Attaché for the Argentine Embassy in Spain. Beatriz Guido passed away in Madrid, Spain, on February 29, 1988.
