Nationality Spanish

Beatriz de Bobadilla (born 1440, died 1511) was a Spanish noblewoman and a close friend of Queen Isabella I of Castile. She was a trusted adviser to the Queen throughout her rule. Beatriz was so close to Isabella that she was once mistaken for the Queen during an attack.

A Loyal Friend to the Queen

Beatriz de Bobadilla was born in 1440. Her parents were Mosén Pedro de Bobadilla and Beatriz de Corral. Her father was the castellan (or commander) of Arévalo Castle [es]. This was the same castle where Isabel de Trastámara, who would later become Queen of Castile, grew up and went to school.

Beatriz was about ten years older than Isabella. Because of this, she often acted like an older sister to Isabella. They became very close friends and remained so for their entire lives.

Protecting Isabella

There is a famous story about Beatriz showing her loyalty to Isabella. Isabella was briefly engaged to a much older man named Pedro Girón Acuña Pacheco. Many people believed he was not a good match for Isabella. The story says that Beatriz threatened to harm Pedro Girón to make sure Isabella stayed happy and healthy.

Beatriz also played a part in the efforts by Henry IV of Castile to keep Isabella and Ferdinand II of Aragon from marrying. Some people, like Juan Pacheco, tried to convince Isabella's ladies-in-waiting that this marriage could be dangerous. They worried it might give too much power to Ferdinand's father, King John II of Aragon.

Her Family's Legacy

The Bobadilla family had a long history of serving the Crown of Castile. This means they had been important figures in the Spanish royal court for many years.

Beatriz had a niece also named Beatriz de Bobadilla y Ossorio. This niece became the Governess of La Gomera, an island. She was sometimes called "the Huntress" because of her many romantic adventures at the Castilian court. Other important relatives of Beatriz included Francisco Fernández de Bobadilla and Isabel de Bobadilla.
