Beauchamp Bagenal (1741 – 1 May 1802) was an Irish politician and a well-known figure in his time. He was famous for his lively personality and for fighting duels.
Beauchamp Bagenal was born in County Carlow in 1741. His father was Walter Bagenal, and his mother was Eleanor Beauchamp. He became the owner of his family's large estates when he was only 11 years old. People often said he was the most handsome man in Ireland.

Life at Dunleckney
Beauchamp Bagenal lived at his home called Dunleckney, near Muine Bheag in County Carlow. He was known for hosting grand parties and for the way he managed his household, which was almost like a small kingdom. Because of this, he earned the nickname "King" Bagenal.
He was known for his unique way of entertaining. He kept duelling pistols nearby during meals. He would use one to tap a barrel of wine. He also used them to show he was serious, but he wasn't as violent as some stories suggest.
Duels and Reputation
Even though he had a reputation for being wild, Beauchamp Bagenal fought only about a dozen duels. This was a small number compared to other famous duelists of his time. One of his duels was against his own cousin, Bagenal Harvey. His cousin shot first but missed. Bagenal was happy and told his cousin to go back home and get breakfast ready, showing he wasn't truly angry.
Many stories exist about Bagenal's unusual and interesting behavior. He had a physical disability and was lame, meaning he had difficulty walking. When he fought a duel, he sometimes had to lean against a tombstone for support.
Political Career
Beauchamp Bagenal was also a politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons.

- From 1761 to 1768, he represented Enniscorthy.
- From 1768 to 1776, and again from 1778 to 1783, he represented County Carlow.
As an MP, he helped make laws and represent the people of his area in the Irish Parliament.
