The 'Beauty of Bath' Apple
This apple was created in 1864 by a person named George Cooling. It quickly became popular. In 1887, it even won a special award from the Royal Horticultural Society. This award showed that it was a top-quality fruit.
What Makes It Special?
The 'Beauty of Bath' apple is one of the earliest apples to be ready for picking. It usually ripens in August. Sometimes, if the weather is warm, it can be ready as early as July. It might even last into September.
This apple is quite delicate. It can bruise very easily. Because of this, people usually pick them carefully by hand. Sometimes, the apples can fall off the tree before they are fully ripe. In the past, farmers would put straw under the trees. This helped to cushion the falling apples and stop them from getting damaged.
How It Looks and Tastes
When you first bite into a 'Beauty of Bath' apple, it might taste a little sharp. But as you keep eating, the taste becomes sweeter. The inside of the apple is usually white. Sometimes, you might see a red blush just under the skin. This red color doesn't happen in every apple, but it's a cool surprise when it does!
The tree itself has pretty pale pink flowers when it blossoms. Its leaves are a medium to large size and have a blue-green color.
