Beck Peak facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Beck Peak is a tall mountain peak in Antarctica. It stands at 2,650 meters (about 8,694 feet) high. This impressive peak is located on the eastern side of the Amundsen Glacier.

It is found in the Queen Maud Mountains, which are part of the vast continent of Antarctica. Beck Peak is about 4 kilometers (2 nautical miles) northwest of another mountain called Mount Stubberud. It sits on a ridge that comes down from the northern Nilsen Plateau.

Discovering and Mapping Beck Peak

Beck Peak was first seen and mapped using photos taken from the air and ground. This happened during the Byrd Antarctic Expedition between 1928 and 1930. This expedition was an important journey to explore Antarctica.

Later, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) mapped the peak in much more detail. They used surveys and air photos taken by the U.S. Navy between 1960 and 1964. This helped create very accurate maps of the area.

How Beck Peak Got Its Name

The peak was officially named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. This committee is responsible for naming places in Antarctica.

They named it after Andreas Beck. He was an important person on Amundsen's South Pole expedition from 1910 to 1912. Andreas Beck was a crew member and an "ice pilot." An ice pilot is someone who helps guide ships safely through icy waters.

This naming also honors Roald Amundsen, a famous explorer. In 1911, Amundsen had named a mountain "Mount A. Beck" to remember Andreas Beck. The current Beck Peak is not the exact same mountain Amundsen named, but its name keeps the spirit of his original tribute alive.
