Bedford Row, Limerick facts for kids

Bedford Row (Irish: Rae Bedford) is a busy shopping street in Limerick, Ireland. It's named after John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford. He was a very important person who represented the King or Queen in Ireland from 1757 to 1761.

The street starts at O'Connell Street and goes west. It meets Henry Street and continues between Dunnes Stores and the Augustinian Church. The street finally ends at Howley's Quay.

Exploring Bedford Row

Bedford Row has changed a lot over the past few years. It has received many updates and new developments. The part of the street between O'Connell Street and Henry Street is now only for people walking, not cars. This makes it a much nicer place to shop and hang out. The southern end of the street has also been completely rebuilt into a new, modern shopping area.

A Street with History

Bedford Row used to be home to a huge movie theater called the Savoy Theatre. It could seat 1,000 people! But in 1989, it was taken down to build a new cinema complex. Later, that complex was also removed, and now a fancy 5-star hotel, the Savoy Hotel, stands there.

There was also a Methodist Church on Bedford Row a long time ago. It is now closed, but you can still see its original front. This old facade is now part of The Gallery, which has offices, and the shop Sostrene Grene.
