History of Beech Bluff

Early Days and Name Origin

The land where Beech Bluff is today was first home to the Chickasaw people. They were a Native American tribe. You can still find an old earthwork left behind by them. An earthwork is a large structure made from earth.

In 1852, a post office opened in Beech Bluff. At that time, the area was also known as Homer. People used to visit it as a summer resort. This means it was a popular place for vacations.

Between 1888 and 1890, a train track was built through the area. It was part of the Tennessee Midland Railway. After this, the name of the community officially became Beech Bluff. The name comes from a large group of native beech trees near a local bluff. A bluff is a steep cliff or hill.

By 1897, about 300 people lived in Beech Bluff.

Schools in Beech Bluff

Beech Bluff once had a high school. It started as a one-room schoolhouse in 1885. The high school closed in 1977. This happened during a time when schools across the United States were working to end segregation.

Later, the building became a grade school called Beech Bluff Elementary. In 2016, it was changed into a recreation center. A recreation center is a place where people can go for fun activities.

Geography and Land

Beech Bluff is built on special soil called loess. Loess is a type of fine, yellowish-brown soil. This soil has created brown or grayish-brown silt loam soils in the area.

These soils are known by different names depending on how well they drain water. For example, where the drainage is good, the soils are called Grenada, Memphis, or Lexington series. In areas where water drains a bit slower, the soil is called Calloway.
