Belcoville: A Community's Story
How Belcoville Began
Belcoville was started in March 1918. This was during World War I, a very big global conflict. The community was built to house workers. These workers were employed at a nearby factory. The factory made supplies for the war effort.
Life in Early Belcoville
The community grew very quickly. By August of 1918, many buildings were ready. These included a town hall, a school, and a bank. There was even a bowling alley for fun. Different types of stores opened too.
At its busiest time, Belcoville had almost 10,000 people living there. It was a bustling place. Everyone worked together to support the war.
What Happened After the War?
The factory kept making supplies until 1919. This was after World War I had ended. Once production stopped, the factory was taken apart. Its materials were reused or recycled.
After the factory was gone, the land was sold. The Mays Landing Water Company bought it. Later, in 1923, new community groups formed. A church was founded, and so was a fire company. These new groups helped the community continue.
