Belinda Hocking is an amazing Australian swimmer who used to compete in backstroke races. She was part of the Australian Institute of Sport, which helps train top athletes. Belinda, also known as "Bindy," was born on September 14, 1990, in Wangaratta, Victoria. She started swimming when she was just four years old!

Belinda's Swimming Journey

Belinda Hocking had a long and successful career in swimming. She competed in many big events around the world.

Early Competitions

In December 2007, Belinda showed her talent at the Telstra Australian Swimming Championships. She placed fifth in the 200-metre backstroke. She also won a gold medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. At the Australian Youth Olympic Festival, she won gold in both 100- and 200-metre backstroke. She also helped her team win gold in the 4×100-metre medley relay.

Olympic Dreams

Belinda qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, China. She swam in the 200-metre backstroke event and finished eighth. Later that year, she won a silver medal in a relay at the FINA World Short Course Championships. She even set a Commonwealth record in the 50-metre backstroke!

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Belinda competed again. She swam in the 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke races. She finished seventh in the 100m and tenth in the 200m event.

Belinda also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She placed fifth in the 200-metre backstroke.

Commonwealth Games Success

The 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, were a big highlight for Belinda. She won two gold medals! She took gold in the 200-metre backstroke. She also helped her team win gold in the 4 x 100-metre medley relay. Belinda set new Commonwealth Games records in both of these events. She also earned a bronze medal in the 100-metre backstroke.

Taking a Break

In 2015, Belinda had to take a break from swimming. She faced a few challenges, including a shoulder injury that needed surgery. She also dislocated her knee and had a burn injury. During this time, she started studying for a degree in primary education.

Retirement

Belinda Hocking officially announced her retirement from competitive swimming on March 3, 2017. She had a fantastic career filled with many achievements!

Belinda's Life Outside the Pool

Belinda went to St. Bernard's Catholic Primary School in Wangaratta. She later trained at the Nunawading Swimming Club. Besides her swimming career, she also pursued her education.
