Belize and the United Kingdom are two countries that share a special connection. Both nations have Charles III as their King. He is known as the King of Belize in Belize. Both countries are also part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations. The Commonwealth is a group of countries that were once part of the British Empire. The United Nations is a global organization that works for peace and cooperation.
A Look Back: History of Belize and the UK
Belize became an independent country from the United Kingdom in 1981. Before this, it was known as British Honduras. Even after Belize became independent, the British army stayed there for a while. This was until the 1990s.
A country called Guatemala had always said that Belize belonged to them. But then, Guatemala signed an agreement that recognized Belize's independence. The United Kingdom still has a special training center for its army in Belize today.
Royal Visits to Belize
Queen Elizabeth II visited Belize two times. Her first visit was in October 1985. She returned again in February 1994.
On March 3, 2012, Prince Harry visited Belize. He was on a trip to several Commonwealth countries. He represented his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, during her Diamond Jubilee. This was his first solo trip as a royal. During his visit, he renamed a street in the capital city. It was called Zennia Boulevard. He renamed it "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II Boulevard" to honor his grandmother.
Where They Meet: Diplomatic Offices
Both Belize and the United Kingdom have special offices in each other's countries. These offices help the two nations work together. They are called high commissions.
