Bell Rock Memorial Park is a public park located in Malden, Massachusetts. You can find it between Main, Wigglesworth, Meridan, and Ellis Streets. This park is special because it was once the site of Malden's very first meeting houses, where people gathered for worship. Today, it features a memorial statue called "The Flag Defenders" dedicated to American Civil War soldiers. There is also a memorial for World War II. The park was designed in 1910 by a famous landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr.. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, recognizing its importance.

Why is it called Bell Rock?

The park gets its name from a large rock that stands out in the area. Back in 1658, a bell was hung from scaffolding on top of this rock. This bell was used to call people to church services. Even though the bell and the meeting houses were moved by 1727, the name "Bell Rock" stuck around. For many years after, the land was simply used for pasture.

Who Designed the Park?

In 1907, the city of Malden decided to create a sculpture to honor its American Civil War soldiers. They hired Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. to help find the best spot for this monument. Olmsted was already working with the city on other park projects. He suggested the Bell Rock site, which the city had bought in 1904.

Olmsted worked on the park's design from 1908 to 1917. He carefully planned the paths to fit the natural shape of the land. He also made sure the paths offered great views of the sculpture. The sculpture was placed at the highest point in the park. The paths were also designed to connect smoothly with the nearby neighborhood. This was a challenge because the land changed a lot in height.

What is "The Flag Defenders" Sculpture?

The main sculpture in the park is called "The Flag Defenders." It is made of bronze and was created by Bela Pratt. The sculpture shows three figures. They represent the three main parts of the military at that time: the Navy, the Army, and the Marines. One figure holds an American flag. The other two figures are crouching, keeping watch. The sculpture sits on a special base designed by R. Clipson Sturges.

Other Important Memorials

Besides "The Flag Defenders," the park has other memorials. There are several plaques that tell about the park's early history. Some honor soldiers from the American Revolutionary War. There are also larger memorials for other conflicts the country has been involved in. You can also find a stone and bronze tablet honoring Michael Wigglesworth. He was a very important minister in Malden during the 1600s.
