The Start of Bellaterra
Bellaterra began to grow as a neighborhood in 1929. A pharmacist named Bartomeu rented some land from his father-in-law. He then built the Bellaterra railway station there. This station was on the Barcelona–Vallès Line. Back then, a company called Ferrocarrils de Catalunya (FCC) ran the trains. Today, the FGC operates this train line. The railway station helped the area develop.
Exploring Bellaterra's Special Places
In the center of Bellaterra, you'll find the Park of El Pedregar de Bellaterra. This park is like a garden-museum and covers about 1.2 hectares. Inside the park, there's a restaurant and beautiful gardens. You can also see water sources and waterfalls. Many sculptures by famous artists like Subirachs and Charles Collet are placed around the park. There are also marble statues and an outdoor theater for about 150 people.
The parish of the Holy Creu is also in the heart of Bellaterra. It's a local church for the community.
The University Campus
Between Bellaterra and another area called Serraperera, you'll find the campus of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This university campus was built in 1968. It officially opened its doors in 1971. It's a large area where many students come to study and learn.
Bellaterra's Future
Bellaterra is currently changing its official status. It is becoming a decentralised municipal entity (EMD). This means it will have more control over its own local services and decisions. It's a step towards managing its own community more directly.
