Bellevue is a neighborhood located in Schenectady, New York, in the United States. It's known for being home to the main factory of General Electric (GE), which was built way back in 1886. For a long time, GE's main office was here before it moved to Connecticut in the 1970s. Many people who lived in Bellevue used to walk to work at the GE factory. Bellevue became part of the city of Schenectady in 1903. Before that, it was part of the town of Rotterdam, just like its neighbor, Mont Pleasant.

In the year 2000, about 6,223 people lived in Bellevue. This was a small decrease from 1990. The number of older adults (65 and up) went down the most. The number of young children (0-4) also decreased. The average age of people in Bellevue was about 35.8 years old.

Where is Bellevue Located?

Bellevue covers about 826 acres (which is about 1.29 square miles) in the western part of Schenectady. It is the second largest neighborhood in the city by size.

To the east, a railroad line separates Bellevue from the Mont Pleasant neighborhood. The town of Rotterdam surrounds Bellevue on its north, west, and south sides.

There are also some natural "bluffs" in Bellevue. These are like small cliffs that separate the homes higher up from the lower area where the GE factory is. These bluffs are about 50 to 100 feet tall.

How is Land Used in Bellevue?

A big part of Bellevue's land, about 39%, is used for industrial purposes. This is mostly because of the large General Electric factory. If you don't count the factory, then only about 1% of the land is used for industry.

Single-family homes (houses for one family) make up the next largest use of land. About 192 acres are used for these homes. However, Bellevue doesn't have special rules that say land can only be used for single-family homes. This means that a single-family house could legally be changed into a two-family house at any time.
