Bellver Castle is a special castle in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Its name, bellver, means "good view" in an old language, and it certainly lives up to that! King Jaime II ordered it built in 1311 to be a home for the kings of Mallorca.
This amazing castle stands high up, about 112 metres (367 ft) above the sea. Today, it belongs to the city of Palma de Mallorca. It is now a museum that tells the story of the city. You can visit it and explore its history!
What was Bellver Castle used for?
Over the years, Bellver Castle had many different jobs:
- It was a safe place during attacks from the Turkish navy.
- It served as a military prison.
- It was a strong fort during a time of rebellion called the Germanias.
- It offered shelter when a serious illness, the plague, spread through the area.
A Famous Spanish Landmark
Bellver Castle is so important that it was chosen as one of the top 100 finalists for the "12 Treasures of Spain" in 2007. This shows how much people value its history and beauty.
