A Glimpse into History

How Belmonte de San José Began

Belmonte de San José has a long history. It was once part of the lands controlled by the Military Order of Calatrava. This was a group of knights who helped protect the area a long time ago. In 1232, this Order gave the town its first special rules, called a Town Charter. Later, in 1337, Belmonte de San José was officially given the title of a town.

Important Buildings and Monuments

The Church of El Salvador

The most important building in Belmonte de San José is the parish church of El Salvador. It is built in the beautiful Baroque style. This style is known for its fancy decorations and grand look.

Work on the church began in 1742. A man named Cosme Bayod was in charge of building it. Later, other builders like Simón Moreno and José Sastruz helped finish different parts of the church. The church was built using strong materials like masonry and stonework.

The Town Hall

The town hall, also called the Casa Consistorial, is another important building. It is a Renaissance-style building with three floors. It was built in 1575 using large, carefully cut stones called ashlar. This building is where the local government of Belmonte de San José works.
