History of Bemersyde House
Bemersyde House has a long and interesting past. It started as a type of strong tower house called a "peel tower" way back in the 1500s. Peel towers were built to protect people from attacks.
In 1921, the British Government bought Bemersyde House. They gave it as a special gift to Field-Marshal The 1st Earl Haig. He was a very important leader of the British army during World War I. This gift was a way to thank him for his service.
Today, Bemersyde House is the home of the chief of Clan Haig. A "clan" is like a big family group in Scotland. The current chief is Alexander Douglas Derrick Haig, 3rd Earl Haig.
The Haig Family Motto
The family motto of the Earls Haig is "Tyde what may". This motto comes from a poem written in the 1200s by a poet named Thomas the Rhymer. The poem predicted that there would always be a Haig living at Bemersyde:
'Tyde what may betyde
Haig shall be Haig of Bemersyde'.
This means that no matter what happens, a Haig will always be the owner of Bemersyde House.
