About Ben Philippe

Early Life and Education

Ben Philippe was born in Haiti and grew up in Montreal, Canada. He studied at Columbia University, where he earned his first degree in 2011. Later, he continued his studies at the Michener Center for Writers in Austin, Texas. Today, Ben Philippe lives in New York City. He also teaches as a professor at Barnard College.

His Books and Awards

Ben Philippe's first novel, The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, became very popular. In 2020, it was named one of the best fiction books for young adults by the ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults. He also won the 2020 William C. Morris Award for this book.

In 2020, Ben Philippe released another novel called Charming As A Verb. The next year, in 2021, he published a memoir titled Sure, I'll Be Your Black Friend. This memoir was recognized by the CBC as one of Canada's best nonfiction books.

Work in Television

Besides writing books, Ben Philippe also works as a screenwriter for television. In January 2022, he was nominated for two important awards: the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: New Series and the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Comedy Series. These nominations were for his work on the TV show Only Murders in the Building.
