History of Benafarces
Benafarces has a long history. In the year 1147, a special agreement was made for the village.
The Fuero of 1147
A nobleman named Osorio Martínez gave Benafarces a fuero. A fuero was like a set of special laws or rights given to a town or village. It helped organize how the community worked and what rules people followed. King Alfonso VII approved this fuero, making it official.
In return for these special rights, the people of Benafarces had to make a yearly payment. This payment wasn't money, but goods! They had to give:
- half a sheep
- ten loaves of bread
- some barley (a type of grain)
- some must (which is fresh grape juice before it becomes wine)
This shows how important farming and livestock were to the community back then.
