Benedetto Giustiniani (born June 5, 1554 – died March 27, 1621) was an important Italian church leader. He became a cardinal in 1586, which is a very high rank in the Catholic Church, chosen by Pope Sixtus V. Cardinals are special advisors to the Pope and often help choose new Popes.

A Life of Service in the Church

Benedetto Giustiniani was born in Genoa, Italy. He dedicated his life to serving the Church. Besides being a cardinal, he held other important jobs. For example, he was a Papal legate (a special representative of the Pope) in Bologna. He also served as a bishop in different areas, like Sabina from 1615 to 1620, and Porto from 1620 until his death in 1621.

Helping Choose Popes

One of the most important duties of a cardinal is to participate in a papal conclave. This is a special meeting where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope when the previous one has died or resigned. Benedetto Giustiniani took part in two of these important elections: one in 1592 and another in 1621.

A Love for Art

Benedetto Giustiniani was also known for his interest in art. He, or perhaps his brother Vincenzo, asked the famous artist Domenichino to paint Saint John the Evangelist between 1621 and 1629. After Benedetto passed away, a list of his belongings showed he owned a huge collection of 280 paintings! This shows he was a big supporter of artists and loved beautiful artworks.

Benedetto Giustiniani died in Rome on March 27, 1621. He was buried in the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
