Beneharo facts for kids
Beneharo was an important leader, known as a mencey, of the Guanche people on the island of Tenerife. He ruled the area called Anaga. The Guanches were the native people of the Canary Islands before Europeans arrived.
Beneharo's Time of Peace and Conflict
In 1492, Beneharo made a peace agreement with Lope de Salazar. Salazar was sent by Francisco Maldonado, who was the governor of Gran Canaria. This agreement aimed to keep peace between the Guanches and the Europeans.
However, soon after this peace, a group of Europeans raided Anaga and took some Guanches as slaves. Because of this unfair act, Beneharo decided to stop supporting the Europeans.
Later, when Alonso Fernández de Lugo arrived on Tenerife, Beneharo once again agreed to a peace treaty with the Castilians (people from Castile, a kingdom in Spain). This shows how complicated the relationships were during this time.
Remembering Beneharo
Today, you can find a bronze statue of Beneharo in Candelaria, a town on Tenerife. This statue stands alongside statues of the other Guanche menceys of Tenerife, honoring their history and leadership.
