Benjamin Alvord Jr. (born May 15, 1860 – died April 13, 1927) was an important American soldier. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Benjamin Alvord, who was also a soldier and a scientist.

Early Life and Military Career
Benjamin Alvord Jr. was born in Vancouver, Washington. He went to the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. He graduated in 1882, ranking 17th in his class. After graduating, he joined the 20th Infantry Regiment. He also attended a special school for soldiers at Fort Leavenworth.
Teaching and Service Abroad
Alvord became a teacher at West Point. He also taught at the Infantry and Cavalry School. Later, he served in the Philippines as a major. He worked in ordnance, which deals with military weapons and ammunition. He also served as an adjutant, helping with administrative tasks. He was the adjutant general for the Department of Luzon. For his service, he received the Silver Citation Star.
World War I and Later Years
Alvord was promoted to brigadier general. In May 1917, he became the adjutant general for the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. This meant he helped manage the army's paperwork and organization. He earned the Distinguished Service Medal for his excellent work during the war. He left Europe in 1918 because he became ill. In 1922, he was named Assistant Adjutant General of the Army. He held this important job until he retired in 1924.
Later Life and Legacy
Benjamin Alvord Jr. passed away on April 13, 1927. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. This is a famous cemetery where many American soldiers are laid to rest.

Alvord was married to Margaret McCleery. Her father, J. B. McCleery, was an Army chaplain. Margaret's sister, Kate, was married to Major General John Frank Morrison.
