Benjamin Chapman's Early Life and Military Career
Benjamin Chapman started his military career as a Cornet. This was a junior officer rank in a cavalry unit. He served in a cavalry regiment led by Murrough O'Brien. Later, he was promoted to Captain.
Serving in Ireland
Captain Chapman took part in the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. This was a period when the English army, led by Oliver Cromwell, took control of Ireland. After this conquest, Oliver Cromwell gave Captain Chapman a large piece of land.
The Killua Estate
This land was in County Westmeath, Ireland. It was called Killua, or sometimes St. Lucy's. Before this, Killua was a "preceptory" of the Knights Hospitaller. This means it was a type of headquarters or base for these ancient knightly orders.
Chapman Family Background
Benjamin Chapman's father, William, and his uncle, John, had a famous relative. Their cousin was Sir Walter Raleigh, a well-known explorer and writer. Sir Walter Raleigh helped them get land in County Kerry, Ireland.
Land Troubles
