The Benjamin Learned House is a very old and special home in Dublin, New Hampshire. It was built a long time ago, between 1767 and 1770. This makes it one of the oldest buildings still standing in the town.

The house is important for a few reasons. It belonged to the Learned family, who were well-known in the area. It also played a part in a trend where wealthy people built large summer homes in the early 1900s. Because of its history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list includes places that are important to American history.

What Does the Benjamin Learned House Look Like?

The Benjamin Learned House is in a quiet, countryside area of southeastern Dublin. It sits near where Upper Jaffrey Road meets Snow Hill Road. The house is on the east side of a long driveway.

House Design and Features

This house is a 1-1/2 story building, meaning it has one main floor and a smaller upper floor. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof, called a gabled roof. The outside walls are covered with vinyl siding.

The front of the house has five sections, called bays, with windows placed evenly around the main door. The front door has a small porch with a sloped roof, supported by round columns. Two small windows with their own little roofs, called dormers, stick out from the front of the main roof. Inside, you can still see some of the original parts, like old fireplaces and wooden walls.

Who Lived in the Benjamin Learned House?

The house was built by Benjamin Learned, who was one of the first people to settle in Dublin. He built it between 1767 and 1770. His family owned the house for more than 100 years.

Benjamin Learned's Role in Dublin

Benjamin Learned was a very important person in Dublin. He helped run the town as a selectman. He also worked as a school commissioner, helping with education. For many years, he was a deacon at the local church.

The House as Part of a Summer Estate

In 1896, the Benjamin Learned House became part of a large summer estate called Knollwood. This estate belonged to a man named Franklin MacVeagh. Wealthy families often bought land and built big homes in places like Dublin for their summer vacations.

Later, in the early 1940s, a famous artist named Jacob Bates Abbott lived in the house. The house was sold out of the Knollwood estate in 1948.
