Knollwood is a very old and special summer house in Dublin, New Hampshire. It was built a long time ago, in 1899-1900. This big house was designed by famous architects named Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. It was made for a banker named Franklin MacVeagh to use as a summer home.
Knollwood is one of the most important summer estates in Dublin. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This means it's a protected historical site in the United States.
What is Knollwood Like?
Knollwood is located in a beautiful part of southeastern Dublin. You can find it on the south side of Upper Jaffrey Road. The main house sits on a clear, flat area. From here, you can see amazing views of Mount Monadnock and the hills around it.
The house itself is quite large, with two and a half stories. It's made of wood and has a sloped roof. The outside is covered with shingles, which are like flat pieces of wood. The house has a unique "H" shape. It also has a long part that stretches out to the west. A big porch runs along most of the south side of the house. You can also spot several chimneys on the roof, designed in a style called Queen Anne.
Who Lived at Knollwood?
Knollwood was built between 1899 and 1900. It was designed for Franklin MacVeagh, a wealthy banker from Chicago. The architects, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, were from Boston. This house shows how their architectural style changed over time. They started with more fancy designs. Later, they began to use simpler, more classic styles. These styles are known as Georgian Revival and Classical.
Franklin MacVeagh was a very important person. From 1909 to 1913, he served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury. This job meant he was in charge of the country's money. During this time, he invited President William Howard Taft to visit Knollwood twice!
Later, in 1954, a man named Ernest Henderson bought the house. He was the person who started the famous Sheraton Hotel chain. So, Knollwood has been home to some very interesting and important people throughout history.
