Benjamin Oliveira (1806 – 28 September 1865) was a British politician from the Whig party. He lived in Hyde Park Street, London. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA).
Who Was Benjamin Oliveira?
Benjamin Oliveira was born in 1806. His father, Dominick Oliveira, was a merchant from London with Portuguese roots. Benjamin spent a lot of his younger years in Portugal.
Early Life and Interests
Later, Benjamin Oliveira moved back to London. He became quite wealthy and lived in Hyde Park Street. He was very interested in the development of railways. He even wrote a book about his travels and adventures. He also decided to join a political group called the Whigs.
Political Career
In 1852, Benjamin Oliveira was chosen as a Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Pontefract. An MP is someone who represents people in the government. However, he did not win the next election in 1857.
Other Achievements
Besides his political work, Benjamin Oliveira was also involved in other important groups. He was part of the council for the Society of Arts. In 1835, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group for scientists and thinkers.
Benjamin Oliveira passed away at his home in London in 1865.
