What the House Looks Like
This house is a single-story building. It is built in a style called "Cape style." The main part of the house is made of brick. There is also a wooden section at the back. The front of the house has five windows or doors across. The main door is in the middle. It has small windows on either side. A stone piece is above the door. Four thin chimneys stick up from the brick roof. A porch with a sloped roof is on the side facing the street.
Inside the House
Inside, the house still has many original features from the 1800s. You can see the old wooden details around the fireplaces. The doors and their latches are also original. This helps visitors imagine what life was like long ago.
History of the House
The Benjamin Rowe House was probably built around 1835. It is one of the best-preserved houses from the 19th century in Gilford. Over the years, the house changed a bit. This happened especially in the early 1900s. At that time, the property was a busy dairy farm.
In the 1990s, the house was carefully restored. Workers removed the newer changes. They made it look like it did in the 1800s again. The town of Gilford bought the farm in 1970. For a short time in the 1980s, town offices were located in the house. Today, the Benjamin Rowe House is a local history museum. It helps people learn about Gilford's past.
