The Benjamin Stickney Cable Memorial Hospital is a historic building in Ipswich, Massachusetts. It is located where two main roads, Route 1A and Route 133, meet. This building was once a hospital. It was built in 1917 and has a special design called Colonial Revival.

A Special Hospital Building

The Benjamin Stickney Cable Memorial Hospital is known for its history and unique architecture. It served the community for many years. Today, it has been changed into apartments.

How the Hospital Started

People in Ipswich wanted a hospital for a long time. They started raising money in 1906. A wealthy person named Richard T. Crane, Jr. helped a lot. He owned a large estate called Castle Hill.

Mr. Crane's friend, Benjamin Stickney Cable, died in a car accident in 1915. To honor his friend, Mr. Crane decided to help build the hospital. He bought the land for the hospital. He also gave $145,000 to help pay for its construction.

Designing the Building

A famous hospital architect named Edward F. Stevens designed the building. He made it in a style called Georgian Revival. This style fit well with the old, colonial buildings in Ipswich.

The first part of the hospital was two and a half stories tall. It was made of brick and terracotta. The building was shaped like the letter "H".

Inside, some parts were very fancy. The Memorial Hall and the patients' day room had beautiful wood panels. They also had French doors with special leaded glass. The ceilings had detailed crown molding.

Growing Over Time

In 1961, a large new section was added to the hospital. This addition was built on the east side. It made the hospital much bigger. The number of beds doubled from 20 to 41.

A dining hall was also built at this time. It was placed on the side of a hill. This dining hall was near the patients' outdoor area at the back of the building.

What Happened Next

The hospital stopped operating in 1980. The building was empty for a few years. In the late 1980s, it was changed into apartments.

In 1990, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special historic site. However, the parts added in 1961 are not considered part of the historic listing.
