Who Was Benjamín Carrión?

Benjamín Carrión was born into a well-known family in Loja. He studied to become a lawyer. He held many important jobs in the government. These included being a Minister of Education and a legislator, which means he helped make laws.

He also worked as a diplomat in several countries. He represented Ecuador in places like Mexico and Chile. This allowed him to build connections between Ecuador and other nations.

His Most Famous Work

In 1934, Benjamín Carrión published a book called Atahuallpa. Many people think this is his most important work. The book is a biography about the Spanish conquest of the Inca empire. Founding the House of Ecuadorian Culture

One of Benjamín Carrión's biggest achievements was founding the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana (House of Ecuadorian Culture) in 1944. He became its first president. He worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality.

Despite many challenges, he managed to open the first main building in May 1947. This building is now a famous landmark in the city of Quito. The Benjamín Carrión Palace was finished in 1948.

From the very beginning, Carrión believed in the importance of the House's museums, library, and publishing press. He started an important literary magazine called Letras del Ecuador. His nephew, Alejandro Carrión, was one of the people who helped run it. The House also published many key Ecuadorian authors.
