The Bennett Farm is a really old farm located at 11 Bennett Road in Henniker, New Hampshire. People have been farming this land since the 1730s! That's when the town of Henniker was first created. The Bennett family has owned and worked on this farm for more than 100 years. It's the oldest farm still standing in this quiet, country area. Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
What is Bennett Farm?
The Bennett Farm covers about 21 acres (8.5 ha) of land. It's in the eastern part of Henniker, New Hampshire. The farm is bordered by Elm Street, Bennett Road, and New Hampshire Route 114.
Farm Buildings
The farm has several buildings. The oldest one is the main house, built around 1780. This house has two stories and a big chimney in the middle. For many years, it was used as a tavern, which is like an old inn or restaurant. In the mid-1800s, it became a farm house only.
The barn at Bennett Farm is quite unique! It was first built in 1834 as a church or a place for religious meetings. In 1860, it was moved to the farm. Then, it was changed into a barn. In 1937, a big storm blew off its steeple. Now, it has a top that looks like a cupola.
A Look at History
The land where Bennett Farm stands was first given to John Clark in 1733. Later, in 1779, John Goodenow bought the property. He started a tavern there the very next year. He probably built the main house we see today.
The property continued to be a tavern until 1848. After that, it was used only for farming. The Bennett family bought the farm in 1902. They had a mixed farm, raising chickens and dairy cows. In more recent years, neighbors have helped to farm the land.
